You might think that PSP is just a gaming console. But the availability of custom firmware truly make it doing something beyond a normal game console can do. Not only it can play your backup game from your memory stick but you can install homebrew application. One of the homebrew that I found very useful is Bookr. Bookr is an ebook reader for PSP. The program is distributed under GNU General Public License (GPL). So its can be downloaded for free and without any extra charge.

Bookr website is located at http://sourceforge.net/projects/bookr/. The latest version is 0.7.1 released on 15/08/2006. This version is for kernel 1.0 and 1.5. But if you have the slim PSP and installed kernel 5.00 M33 you can click here to download the modded version that will work on the latest custom firmware release by Dark Alex.

Installing Bookr is pretty easy. All you have to do is extract the archives you downloaded from http://sourceforge.net/projects/bookr/ or the link that I provided. Then connect your PSP to your computer and copy and paste the extracted Bookr folder from your computer to your memory stick inside the folder call game. You can find it under its parent folder call psp in the root of your memory stick.

Once install you can start the application from XMB. Go to Game -> Memory Stick, then select Bookr from the list. Bookr has a nice interface and easy to understand.

Bookr can read both pdf and text files. If you feel the font is too small for your eyes to read you can zoom it so that it will not hurt your eyes. Besides that you can put your ebook in any folder on your memory stick because Bookr can browser any folder to open an ebook. This is great because you don’t have to put your ebook to any specific folder

Bookr is a great application and it is my favorite application for PSP. I used it to read some of the ebook that I bought online. While it doesn’t have any problem rendering small pdf files but if you open a large pdf files it will crash the application or display an error. This occurred because PSP has a limited memory itself. And other problem that I found while using Bookr is the application crash once in a while. Other than that I do not have any problem using this application and really recommended it other PSP owner who want their PSP to do more that just a tool for playing games.
